Traction engines are self-propelled steam engines that were used to move heavy loads on roads, plough ground or to provide power where needed. Also called road locomotives to distinguish them from steam locomotives (rail).
First wider scale appearance was in the middle of the 19th century, they remained popular until the 1920s and 30s when petrol / diesel powered engines proved too much competition. They are truly impressive machines!
There are many ways of browsing the images on this site: you can view
the latest pictures or the latest comments or quick start uploading your
own photos. And note the thumbnails on the right, they will show you
either the most favourite, the latest pictures or
other relevant steam powered engines!
And
you can use the menu at the top that allows you to 'drill down' and
browse by album (like Steam Wagons or Road Rollers), manufacturer, country, year, specific group and even
by contributor. You can try the simple search facility at the top right.
Tip:
Use the
Additions option in the top menu
to see all the changes since
