Traction engines are self-propelled steam engines that were used to move heavy loads on roads, plough ground or to provide power where needed. Also called road locomotives to distinguish them from steam locomotives (rail).
First wider scale appearance was in the middle of the 19th century, they remained popular until the 1920s and 30s when petrol / diesel powered engines proved too much competition. They are truly impressive machines!
